City of Birmingham Men’s 1stXI started off their league campaign with an away win at Edgbaston. After CoBHC experienced difficulties over obtaining a home pitch, Edgbaston kindly agreed to switch to playing at their home venue to avoid a possible cancellation.

CoBHC turned out with 11 players, on a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon after a week-end of heavy rain.  The game started off well with both teams enjoying possession but CoBHC took an early lead through Jeevan who neatly slotted home a reverse tomahawk from the top of the circle. Edgbaston pulled it back from a quick counter attack. Edgbaston then took another counter attack leading to 2-1 for them. CoBHC enjoyed some good interplay between Zach, Ed, Alex and Scott who set Kyle off down the right wing, playing a ball to Jordan slotting in at the back post to bring it to 2-2.

Just before half time, Jeevan won a short corner pushing the ball to Alex who made a low drag flick into the left corner. Half time and a 3-2 lead. In the second half, CoBHC enjoyed the lion’s share of possession winning 6 short corners and several counter attacks with Jordan, Jeevan and Kyle enjoying lots of chances which were saved or broken down. Mat played a lovely ball to set Jeevan off down the left wing who pulled the ball back to Ed. Some quick thinking saw Scott drive into the circle with a shot and Alex cleverly setting his reverse stick down to beat the keeper. CoBHC’s defence remained resolute with Aquib and Edan supporting Mat to give Neal a quiet second half.

Next week the 1sts are away at Old Hales and the 2nds play at home against Atherstone Adders.

To confirm, 1sts and 2nds will now temporarily enjoy the facilities at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre for their home games. All games scheduled to start at 4.00pm
