What they say about City of Birmingham Hockey Club (Men’s and Juniors)

Anwar Khattak – CEO “As an up and coming local community hockey club, City of Birmingham’s Men’s and Juniors’ volunteers dedicate their time and passion to making it happen in the local community of Small Heath, Bordesley Green, Saltley, Sparkbrook, Alum Rock one of the most deprived areas in the country. Supporting delivery of hockey in local schools free of charge, to raise the profile and awareness of their sport, that is played all too rarely in the Birmingham area. Breaking down the barriers that the sport is an exclusive sport to a certain demographic, by accepting its diversity and letting its volunteers tell its story for them, the Club represents the community it serves.

The club goes further in supporting its own members in developing themselves, helping with University and Job interview preparations and practice, offering opportunities for volunteering to develop CVs and own personal skills as well as trained and qualified mentors, paid for by the club, in supporting its wider reach. This club truly appreciates and
recognises the value in supporting the community, never forgetting its roots.

Thank you to Jeevan and City of Birmingham Hockey Club Men’s and Juniors who attended our HAF summer camp and offered over 25 plus kids in a hard to reach area of Birmingham the chance to play and experience hockey for the first time, it was enjoyed by all. ”

Dennis Kennedy, Founder at Inspire Activity LTD “The Community Games would really like to thank Jeevan, who along with City of Birmingham Hockey Club Men’s and Juniors, his family and friends, have become a very popular activity provider indeed at many of our events throughout the city. They are always keen to engage with visitors, to encourage and promote activity, and also signpost people to the clubs nearest to where they live, whilst all the time having fun. They really are a great sports provider and one we hope to work with for many years to come, they have even become one of our ‘Buddy Bear’ mascot sponsors, to help further our shared aims of inspiring health and happiness through physical activity.”

Ian Fellows – Senior Lecturer in Enterprise and Employability “City of Birmingham Hockey Club – Men’s and Juniors have been a valued partner of Birmingham Newman University since 2019 following their support of the HLSM Project. The club volunteers support the activation of hockey across all areas of Birmingham making hockey an accessible sport to many. The University is proud to be a partner of such a forwarded thinking and dynamic club that serves its local community to increase participation in physical activity.”

Tom Pedersen-Smith – Head of Strategy and Development “Jeevan Chagger made a great contribution to the EuroHockey Executive Leadership Forum, being able to portray his lived experiences within hockey, and how he has developed an inclusive club culture that does so much to support the community. This allowed delegates from across Europe to see and hear about the best practices club hockey should and can portray. The Club also received EH Small Club of the Year 2021 for their great work duly recognised by EuroHockey.”

Courtney Richards – Co-Founder “City of Birmingham Hockey Club Men’s and Juniors have been a partner of ours for the last three years, delivering hockey at our Holiday and HAF programmes for young people in the community that otherwise would not have had access to opportunities to play hockey. Jeevan and his team have been outstanding in engaging with us in confidence building for young people, providing them with stretch and challenge and helping them to learn skills, both valuable on and off the pitch, Our young people have benefited greatly to try something new that they wouldn’t necessarily be able to as well as partaking in a team sport that isn’t widely known in the area we operate. Our goal and ambition is to strengthen our partnership to develop and foster a hockey thriving environment to nurture the skills, interests and potential they show.”
